These are the books I received in my Book of the Month subscription box for the month of January. If you want to sign up for Book of the Month, click HERE. You'll get your first book for $10 and I'll get a little something too :)

BOTM: The Prophets by Robert Jones Jr.

ree

Description: Isaiah was Samuel’s and Samuel was Isaiah’s. That was the way it was since the beginning, and the way it was to be until the end. But when an older man—a fellow slave—seeks to gain favor by preaching the master’s gospel on the plantation, the enslaved begin to turn on their own. Isaiah and Samuel’s love, which was once so simple, is seen as sinful and a clear danger to the plantation’s harmony.

Why I'm Excited for this Book: This book sounds important and heavy and sad. And while those last two descriptors may not sound appealing, after all the fluff I have been reading recently I am looking for something of substance that will take my breath away. I am hoping this is that book.

Add-on: The City We Became by N.K. Jemison

ree

Description: Every great city has a soul. Some are ancient as myths, and others are as new and destructive as children. New York? She's got six.

Why I'm Excited for this Book: Ever since I read Emergency Skin by N.K. Jemison last year, I have been wanting to read everything she has written and am finally getting around to doing that. Before I tackle The Broken Earth Trilogy, I want to try this standalone which I have heard nothing but rave reviews about.

Add-on: The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah

ree

Description: Ernt Allbright impulsively moves his family north, to Alaska, where they will live off the grid in America's last true frontier. Thirteen-year-old Leni, a girl coming of age in a tumultuous time, caught in the riptide of her parents' passionate, stormy relationship, dares to hope that a new land will lead to a better future for her family. She is desperate for a place to belong. Her mother, Cora, will do anything and go anywhere for the man she loves, even if means following him into the unknown.

Why I'm Excited for this Book: I've already read this book, but it is absolutely amazing and I'd love to own a copy to reread it.
