Title: The Natural Mother of the Child

Author: Krys Malcolm Belc

Dates Read: Jan. 12 - Feb. 4

Format: eBook

Rating: ★★★

Description: Krys Malcolm Belc’s visual memoir-in-essays explores how the experience of gestational parenthood—conceiving, birthing, and breastfeeding his son Samson—eventually clarified his gender identity.

Review: At times the stream-of-consciousness style of this memoir can be disorientating because there is not always a clear path of a story to follow, but maybe that is the point. Discovering, navigating, rediscovering, accepting, and renegotiating oneself and one’s place in a world not built for them is disorientating. Ultimately, this is a wholly unique memoir that would speak to individuals navigating nonbinary parenthood as well as those who seek to understand the limitations of our legal system when it comes to nonbinary and trans parenthood.

Final Note: I received an advanced readers copy of this book to review. It is set to be published June 15, 2021.
